Famvir Product Update

GPs can now prescribe FAMVIR tablets for patients with cold sores. Just a single 1500mg oral dose, which is 3 x 500mg tablets, is highly effective, with an improvement in time to healing of all lesions by an average of 2 days, improved time to resolution of pain and tenderness by an average of 1 day, and reduced median time to return to normal skin by 21/2-days. It is recommended that single dose Famvir be initiated as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms to achieve maximum suppression of viral replication, as HSV-1 viral replication peaks in the first 24 hours after the onset of the lesions.
